Yellow Fever Vaccination in India: Certificate, Cost, Centres & Travel Rules
What is yellow fever?
Yellow fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease. Vaccination is the main preventive measure for travellers visiting areas with yellow fever risk. The vaccine is usually given as a single dose; an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis becomes valid 10 days after vaccination and remains valid for the recipient's lifetime under the International Health Regulations.
Documents, fee and authorised centres
- Bring your original passport. The government guidance lists a Seafarer's CDC, defence ID or official passport in specified circumstances when an original passport is unavailable. Confirm acceptance with the centre before visiting.
- Bring relevant treatment records and a child's immunisation record where applicable.
- The government portal states a ₹300 fee per dose. Verify the centre's current booking procedure, schedule and fee.
- Use a vaccination centre authorised by India's Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Some centres require prior registration; operating days vary.
Who should speak with a clinician first?
Tell the vaccination centre about any prior severe reaction to a vaccine or its components, pregnancy or breastfeeding, immune system problems, thymus disease, cancer treatment, recent illness, or other live vaccines. Infants, adults aged 60 or above and people with significant medical conditions need individual assessment. The clinician decides whether vaccination is appropriate and whether a medical waiver is relevant.
Possible side effects
Mild fever, aches or soreness at the injection site can occur. Serious allergic or other adverse reactions are rare but require prompt medical attention. Ask the vaccinating clinician about your individual risk.
Yellow fever vaccination certificate and travel
A correctly completed International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis is valid starting 10 days after vaccination and for the person's lifetime. Keep the original certificate with your travel documents. Incomplete details, missing signatures or stamps, or alterations may cause problems at border checks.
India's port health guidance describes quarantine measures for certain arrivals from yellow fever risk areas without a valid certificate. A medical exemption letter does not automatically remove quarantine requirements. Ask the relevant port health authority about your particular itinerary.
